Why does aging happen

Why Does Aging Happen

The reading for this week is the chapter "Why does aging happen?" from the book, "Why we age: What science is discovering through the body's journey through life".  The book takes categorizes thoughts into three causal theories of aging.  These include: "the good-of-the species theory, the rate-of-living theory and the evolutionary aging theory" (p. 55).  Do you agree with any of these theories?  Are there any other theories out there that you find interesting or have discussed in a class?

For your own blogging this week:
In your own words, how would you explain "Why we age?"
Can you give an example or provide a link to an interesting source that supports your explanation?

  1. Thanks for the link, Sara.
Just curious- is there a way to change the font color? It is hard for me to read with the background :)

  2. I explored the link you posted. It's really interesting how many sources one author cites related to potential theories of aging. Great article!

  3. The article you linked to seems to cite the majority of aging as due to cellular or biological aging. Does this mirror your views, or do you think there are more aspects involved? Interesting aricle, thanks for the link!

  4. I don't really have views on WHY we age, and I'm more interested in HOW we age, and even more interested in slowing or hindering that process if possible.
It's interesting to read the theories on why we age, such as population versus resources. I'm sure there are many aspects that contribute to aging, just as we have discussed in class like environmental, genetic, and lifestyle influences.
Fitness is a big part of my life so I'm a firm believer that maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating right and exercising regularly will procure longevity for anyone.
There are exceptions, like the super athlete we read about that keeled over, but I still think that the majority of people will ultimately benefit from being healthy.
